You need to follow the following steps to troubleshoot a drip irrigation system:

Check for blockages or clogs

You need to check for clogs or leakages in the drip irrigation system. Blockage of the emitters or drippers on the drip tapes may prevent the system from working as expected.

The clogs can be removed by flushing the drip irrigation system. Chemicals can also be used to unclog the drip irrigation system.

Check for leaks

If there are leakages in the drip irrigation system, you need to check all the drip tapes, joints, pipes and connections. Leakages on the drip tapes can be plugged with the use of straight connectors or joiners. Gums can also be used to amend leakages on the pipes and hoses.

Check the water pressure

You should check and ascertain that the water pressure is within the recommended range for your drip irrigation system. If the water pressure is too high, the drip irrigation system may be damaged. If the water pressure is too low, water will not drip out of the emitters and drippers.

Check the Coverage of Drip Irrigation System

Check that the whole farmland is covered with the drip irrigation system. Low pressure may prevent the system from irrigating the whole farmland. Leaks can also reduce the coverage of the drip irrigation system.

Check for damages

Check the drip tapes and drip tubings for damages from animals, sunlight and effects of ageing etc. All damaged drip tapes should be repaired or replaced.

Check for roots intrusion

Check that plants’ roots have not grown into the drip irrigation system. Root intrusion can disrupt the effective functioning of the drip irrigation system.

Check the timer

Check and ensure that the timer is working well as expected. A malfunctioning timer may switch off and on the drip irrigation system at the wrong time.
