The use of a pump is compulsory for a typical drip irrigation system. Without the use of a water pump or a water pumping machine, the drip irrigation system will not work perfectly. It should be noted that drip irrigation systems for very small farms and garden may not need the use of a water pump. Small farms may use a gravity based drip irrigation system.

There are different types of pumps that can be used for drip irrigation systems. Most farmers use petrol powered pumps, diesel powered pumps, electricity powered pumps and solar power pumps.

The following are some of the types of pumps that can be used for a drip irrigation system:

Petrol Water Pumps

Petrol water pumps are pumps powered by petrol. The engine of this type of pump is usually started by pulling a recoil rope. This type of water pump has an engine rating capacity of 5 -15 Horse Power (HP).

Petrol pumps are popular among irrigation farmers in Nigeria. They can also be used as the source of power to supply water into a drip irrigation system. Some popular brands of petrol water pumps in Nigeria are Sumec, Tigmax, Yamaha and Honda.

Diesel Pumps

Diesel pumps are usually bigger than petrol pumps. They can be used as part of the component of a drip irrigation system. The engine ratings of most diesel pumps are between 10 – 1,000 horse powers. There are diesel pumps with engine ratings of above 1,000HP.

Diesel pumps are usually more powerful than petrol pumps. They can pump faster and also pump larger volume of water than petrol pumps. They also usually have higher head than petrol pumps. Diesel pumps are commonly used as irrigation pumps.

Diesel pumps are also known to be long lasting and sturdier than petrol pumps.

Solar Pumps

Solar pumps harness the power of sunlight to pump water. Solar pumps have lower running costs than most types of pumps.

Solar pumps can be used for drip irrigation systems. As a matter of fact, a lot of irrigation farmers in Nigeria are now using solar pumps due to the recent increase in the prices of petrol and diesel.

How the pump is powered

You need to consider if the pump is powered by petrol, diesel, electricity or solar. Can you afford a pump powered by hydrocarbons? Can the selling price of your produce cover the cost of buying fuel? What is the environmental footprint of the type of pump you want to use? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself.

The cost of the pump

The cost of the pump is also a factor to consider when considering buying a pump for a drip irrigation system. You should not buy a pump that will be too costly to affect your profitability.

The quality of the pump

This is also a factor to consider. Asian made pumps especially Chinese made pumps are not as high quality as pumps made in Europe, the US and Canada. It should be noted however that some Chinese made pumps are of a high quality.

What is Drip Irrigation?

Plants make better use of water when they get it through their roots. Drip irrigation unlike other types of irrigation does not spray water to the leaves and stems of plants.
